ORION’ s design engineering group has a new tool in its arsenal:
a state of the art
Waterjet Machining Center. Prototype and production parts alike can be produced with amazing accurancy, and with a fraction of the lead time normally associated with steel rule die manufacture.
During the early phases in a product’s design cycle, only a few parts may be needed to initially verify its fit/function. Typically these parts are subject to later design changes, often after tooling has been built. These tool modifications can add up to extra delays and extra expense. ORION’s highly skilled engineering team needs only your flat DXF or DWG file to produce high quality parts - FAST. Our waterjet is ideal for parts with very small, intricate features that may otherwise require expensive hard tooling, or which cannot be cut with tooling at all. Most of our materials are able to be cut with plain water, using a diamond orifice which generates a 0.005" diameter stream of water. This saves money on expensive abrasives. In most cases , we can produce your parts in less than one hour from the time we receive your CAD file !

This new equipment allows us to offer our customers: Tool-Free Manufacture of parts, where tools are expensive and require time to build, Improved cutting tolerances, when steel rule die tolerances are not close enough, and the ability to cut materials which could not be cut with steel rule dies, such as dense rubbers, and thick plastics.

ORION is now a distributor and fabricator of Rogers Corporation materials. Rogers is the manufacturer of PORON® cellular urethane foams recognized by many industries for their gasketing, sealing and energy absorption properties. Rogers' other major product is BISCO® brand silicone rubber materials for special, high temperature applications.

We have been successful in designing and using their materials - as a result, we are being recognized for these efforts. We are pleased to be able to offer these along with our other laminate materials to help meet all your shielding and insulating needs.

PORON and BISCO are registered trademarks of Rogers Corporation back to top

New inspection System
Orion has taken delivery on a new automated inspection system. This system is capable of measuring parts up to 36" x 24" x 6", as well as measuring multiple parts placed on the stage at the same time. Once a job has been programmed and toleranced, all the inspector needs to do is run the program. The system moves about the part automatically, using stepper drives, and focuses on the features being measured. Since it is automated, the inspector may go about other business while the machine measures a part, makeing the inspector much more effective. This also prevents inspection from being a production bottleneck. In additon, the system assures that all of the measurements that were programmed to be measured are measured each and every time the job is run.

This system is also enabled with programmable lighting. This permits the proper lighting to be used for a particular feature. In some cases, like part edges, a profile lighting is used to backlight the part and provide contrast. When surface features are to be measured, coaxial and surface lighting is used to give the best contrast for those features. Like the motion of the system, lighting is stored for a particular feature, and is recalled when the program is run.

Since this system is computerized, it is able to output measurement data to our SPC software package. This ha probven to be a valuable tool to our Quality Assurance staff. It also prepares all inspection data records, including actual meaurements, deviation from nominal, and out of tolerance conditions.

It is this type of commitment to improvement that has helped ORION become a leader in providing high quality products to our customers.

Request for CAD files

To utilize this system and further minimize the risk of errors its requested that our customers supply us with a CAD file of their products. Currently, ORION is capable of accepting drawings in either the *.DWG or *.DXF formats by using the latest version of AutoCAD R.14 drawing software.

The best way to send files is either by mail (3.5" floppy disk) or by e-mail. E-mail should be directed to Larry Bonney, Quality Assurance Manager, at LBonney@OrionIndustries.com . It is preferable for larger files like *.DXF to be compressed (ZIPPED). back to top

Preco III - Bigger, Faster, More Accurate

In a world where electronics seem to be getting smaller, it seems strange that the parts our customers ask us to produce keep getting larger. To accommodate the increasing need of larger parts, ORION recently added yet another piece of high speed die cutting machinery to its repertoire; a Preco series III automatic die cutting system.

As a complement to our other Preco presses, this machine has some very unique features. It is capable of cut to print registration of +/- 0.003" due to its fiberoptic registration system. The press is fitted with a floating bolster plate, capable of floating tools weighing up to 2000 pounds! By using the fiberoptic system, the bolster can move the tool, in the X, Y and theta (rotational) directions, to provide accurate cut to print registration.

This system is also capable of cutting large parts up to 24 " x 30". This system has a feature list too long to mention here, but some of the highlights are:

24" x 30" cutting surface
60 tons of cutting force
Micrometer controlled cutting depth, capable of kiss cutting
Feed system capable of driving 1" thick materials.
Computer controlled electronic system which stores individual job settings for quick job set-up.

We purchased this press for several reasons. We found this press to be ideally suited for the new generation of EMI shielding products, where shields are required to have the foil recessed around edges and holes to prevent shorting, or where the die must be registered to each piece for an accurate cut.

We also needed to increase our production capacity, and this machine fit the bill. With a throughput rate of up to 7,000 pieces per hour on the smallest parts, ORION is able to offer some of the most competitive labels, insulators, and adhesive backed gaskets in the industry. By bringing the die precisely through the material, but not through the carrier substrate, the PRECO is capable of delivering parts on space-saving rolls which make the customer's assembly process neater and more efficient.

Whether our customers require large chassis insulators or selectively cut shields, this press is ready. It is uniquely suited to meet our wide range of demands so that we may supply our customers with the parts they need. back to top
